Why do we need inspiration? It occurred to me that I have talked about all these great musicians and how inspiring they are but never ever really discussed why musicians need inspiration. There are many questions that can be asked when we think about inspiration. Many of these questions are asked by young beginning instrumentalists but even adults can have a hard time comprehending what a inspiration is and if they need one. Inspiration is an important part of every aspect of our life, but for music it can help us in many ways to achieve the goals we have set for ourselves.
In todays post I would like to look into inspiration by discussing the following:
- What Is Inspiration?
- Who Needs Inspiration?
- Why Do We Need Inspiration?
- What Makes An Inspirational Musician?
- How To Find Your Inspiration?
- Who Are My Inspirations?
What Is Inspiration?
According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary inspiration is:
-something that makes someone want to do something or that gives someone an idea about what to do or create : a force or influence that inspires someone
-a person, place, experience, etc., that makes someone want to do or create something
Who Needs Inspiration?
Lets take to a moment to think about our lives. What are our hobbies, careers, and pastimes? How did we decide to pursue them? Chances are there was something or someone that gave us a desire to either start something new or to improve on something that we have already started.
For example, I have been involved in music all my life. I started playing music before I was old enough to understand inspiration but as I got older there were people and places that inspired me to continue making music. It was the motivating factor in my development as a musician.
The answer to this question is everyone needs inspiration. It is what pushes us to excel in whatever we choose to pursue. Without inspiration there is no real motivation.
Why Do We Need Inspiration?
As mentioned above people need inspiration to push or motivate them to pursue a given task, activity or hobby. While I am sure it is possible to learn something new without a specific inspiration, eventually there needs to be something that inspires them to keep going. A great mentor and music teacher I know asks all of his students to find instrumentalists of their instrument and listen to their music. Although the students don’t realize it he is asking them to go and find their inspiration. The driving force that is going to help them succeed on their instrument.
So in short we need inspiration to be motivated. It is important to our development as musician and as an individual.
What Makes An Inspirational Musician
The truth is anyone can be an inspirational musician. It doesn’t really matter if they have become famous. However, it is usually famous musicians that become inspirations for others. Mainly because they are placed in the spotlight. Quite often it is the musicians who have overcome obstacles that stand out. Those who have struggled to get where they are.
I will look at many different musicians when discussing instrumental inspirations. They won’t always be famous but will have demonstrated great success on their instrument. Every musician will have their own inspiration. It is important to remember that even our inspirations will have had inspirations along the way.
How To Find Your Inspiration
Finding your inspiration is an easy task. You could start by watching videos online of people playing your instrument. By watching them play you can gain insight into the type of musician they are. This just might be the type of musician you are striving to be.
You could also attend public concerts and events. You just may find a local inspiration that you didn’t know exist. Many of my inspirations are not famous but contribute greatly to the community in which they live.
You can find your inspiration almost anywhere. You just need to look around you to see people excelling and inspiring others. I encourage you to start searching.
Who Are My Inspirations?
As I mentioned earlier I started playing music long before I was old enough to understand what an inspiration was but in the years that followed I began to be inspired by others without even knowing it. I have inspirations for all aspects of my music career. Below I outline a few to show that you can many inspirations.
As a Trumpeter: Over the years I have met many trumpet players who have inspired me to keep going. For privacy purposes I will not disclose their names but I can briefly discuss how they have inspired me.
My first real inspiration as a trumpeter was my Aunt. Hearing about her success as a trumpet and cornet player in a variety of ensembles inspired and motivates me to play in a number of different settings. Her success continues to motivate me today as I search for more musical opportunities each and every day.
Another true inspiration for me was my private instructor in University. He helped me discover my abilities as a musician and as an individual. He always had faith in me and pushed me to reach for what I thought was unreachable. To this day his words of encouragement and faith pushes me to strive to be the best that I can be in everything that I do.
I have many other inspirations as a trumpeted but these are the main 2 that have pushed me to keep practicing and striving to be the best musician I can be.
As a Educator:I was in the school system for quite a while before I finally found a true inspiration as a music educator. In my previous work assignment I worked along side a fantastic music educator who has touched the lives of thousands of students through the art of music. It was during this time that I realized how much of an impact a music teacher can have on their students. while working with this teacher I was inspired to try new things and to ask for help when I needed it. This work assignment was perhaps the most inspirational experience I have had as an educator.
As a Community Musician/Conductor:Just recently I have begun to conduct our local community band. The director of this group has given me great inspiration to begin working within the community. The first way she has inspired me is by seeing the countless hours she has invested into keeping our close knit ensemble together regardless of the obstacles. Through it all I don’t think I have ever heard her complain and she always has a smile on her face.
The second way she has inspired me is how she has seen my ability to conduct and offered to help me excel in this area. The greatest inspiration comes from those who see your potential and act on it in a positive way. Because of her I look forward to working with the community band as well as other ensembles that have also approached me to conduct.
So, Why Do We Need Inspiration?
I believe the need for inspiration is self explanatory. It is the driving force or motivation we need to keep pushing forward in whatever we choose to do. Although I wrote this article specifically for music, inspiration is present in all aspects of our lives. I have been inspired as a mother, wife, and even friend over the years. Without inspiration I believe we would be constantly trying to figure out the importance of what we are doing, rather then trying to excel.
